Tick, tock.

Dipping and rising over the ridges of the great tympanum laid a catacomb of lilliputian whiskers. From deep within the chamber, a sound emanated so quiet that it took me forty-five minutes with my ear arrected against the wall since I was thoroughly convinced some furry little woodland creature was trapped between the cheap faux wood panels of my humble abode.

It was my watch on my wrist, friggen noisy little apparatus.

I'll be laughing about this image the whole ride home. You have such a lovely way of describing the minutiae of your life - a regular jane austen of the blogosphere.

You're kidding! I haven't heard a watch in years. I forgot they made sounds. I was actually thinking maybe modern watches didn't anymore. hahaha! Soooo- it's my hearing-eh?

I don't believe I've heard watch since being implanted. Need to check it out myself.

LOL! I haven't heard a watch either-- had no idea they made a sound!

I discovered at a very young age that I could hear the watch ticking by simply turning the switch on my analog hearing aid to "T". When I got my digital hearing aids, I checked to see if I could still hear my watch ticking on "T". Yep! It works. Try it.

I'm jealous! I've never heard a watch!

Anonymous is right, the T coil of a hearing aid can make the ticking of a wristwatch sound like a that of a grandfather case clock, no kidding.

Oh, puh-leese, don't get me started-- my spouse collects antique clocks. One time as a joke for New Year's a long time ago, dear hubby wound up all the clocks in the house to chime, ding-dong, >bang!<, clang, CUCK-OO's, and oh, yes, tick-tocks of every cadence you can imagine, at midnight.
What a cacophony of clocks!!

Lilliputian whisper indeed! When I turn on the T-coil to make sure my watch is really ticking and the battery hasn't run out, I smile about that New Year's.

I laughed so hard. I can just see you trying to find that sound. It's this journey fantastic.

I laughed at your experience... I love it!

I am thinking of getting CI lately, since I am very comfortable with wearing hearing aids (I receive great benefit from them) and I'd like to hear more...

I drive my father crazy by asking him which bird was that??? All birds have different chirps... amazing.

That was a good one!

Years and years ago I used to have a very loud ticking swatch watch, which marked the progress of my hearing loss quite well. At first I could hear it easily with both ears; then I had to squish it to my left ear to hear the tick while I could still hear it with my right ear with my arm full extended; finally it was gone forever on the left and had to be practically stuffed into my right. I wish I still had it so I could try it with my CI! I bet I could hear it again. I don't have a watch with a second hand anymore.

Freakin' Classic rofl! Do you know that it took us twenty-five minutes once to realize that Jordan was hearing the rice krispies going, "Snap, Crackle and Pop!" Unbelievable...love, Jodi

Dude, Anonymous that is the neatest trick! I can barely hear it with my right ear that I wear a HA with (lack of hearing and all that jazz :) but I hear a distinct ticking!

Deb/Cindy/Karen: It sure fooled me too! I never knew those little guys could make a sound!

Ann_C : Thank goodness it was on New Years and not on Daylight Savings Time! I love a challenge and that might have driven me bonkers :)

Karen : Getting a CI is an interesting trip I have to say, it doesn't sound like a HA. I always thought I had a raspy voice, like I was getting laryngitis with the HA. With the CI I sound like a woman. It is just something that you have to weigh the pro and cons and see if the risks are worth it.

Jeff: Get a watch with a second hand, I think a cheap one would do :) its worth the hunting trip *chuckle*

Everyone else I'm glad I made ya smile :) your comments mean the world!!

I loved the way you wrote your story. Even after wearing hearings for 22 years, I still hear noises that have an unknown source. I often recruit the nearest hearing person play guessing games with me. I am often making a fool of myself when I describe the noise to them which includes mimicking the sound. VERY ATTRACTIVE!

Thanks for clearing up where the ticking noise was coming from. You might want to consider a digital watch!

Good lord... you are the craziest writer! Always bust out laughing reading your blog posts!

That's funny about figuring out it was your watch makning the noise. When I was first activated, it took a process of elimination to figure out that my own breathing was the noisy thing! ~Shannon
